What this checklist covers
New vehicles sold and registered in Great Britain need approval showing they meet the required safety and environmental standards. Volume manufacturers usually use GB type approval, administered by the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA); smaller volumes and individual vehicles can use routes such as Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA), run by DVSA. Each vehicle is then supplied with the documents needed to register it.
The UK Vehicle Type Approval Checklist is a 15-point scorecard for GB type approval, vehicle category, safety and environmental requirements, technical documentation, and approval validity. Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on what the auditor sees on the day, and every gap goes into an action plan with an owner and a close date.
AutoSmart tip: GB type approval is a post-Brexit standalone framework — UK market vehicles no longer automatically benefit from EU type approval, and the transition periods for using legacy EU approvals have closed for most vehicle categories. Confirm that every model on sale holds valid GB type approval (not an expired or inapplicable EU approval) before each model-year update and whenever a new variant is introduced.
The checks

Vehicle category and approval route
- Is each vehicle model correctly categorised under the applicable GB type approval vehicle category (M, N, L, O, or T-type) before being placed on the Great Britain market?
- Is the approval route confirmed — whether GB type approval, UKNI approval, or a recognised international approval (UN/ECE or equivalent retained EU approval) — for each model sold?
- As confirmed by the VCA, does the type approval on file confirm that the vehicle meets the required performance standards for its category, covering safety, environmental, and construction requirements?
- Are vehicles placed on the GB market after the applicable transition deadline confirmed as holding a valid GB type approval, not a legacy EU approval that has since expired for GB market purposes?
Safety and environmental requirements
- Are vehicle safety systems (braking, lighting, steering, occupant protection, ADAS where applicable) approved under the relevant UN Regulations or GB equivalent standards?
- Is emissions compliance (Euro 6 or applicable GB standard) confirmed for all models sold, with the relevant approval certificate on file?
- Are GB-specific requirements (speedometer in mph, rear fog lamp regulations, GB-format VIN plate) confirmed for all vehicles placed on the GB market?
- Are EV and hybrid-specific safety requirements (battery protection, high-voltage isolation, pedestrian warning sound) confirmed for all electrified models sold?
Technical documentation and certificates
- Is a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) or equivalent approval document retained for every vehicle model, available for inspection by the VCA or Trading Standards?
- Are technical files supporting the type approval complete, current, and retrievable, containing the basis of approval, test reports, and declarations of conformity?
- Is type approval documentation updated promptly when a vehicle model undergoes a design change that may affect approval scope, with re-approval obtained where required?
Production conformity and approval validity
- Is production conformity maintained for all type- approved models, ensuring vehicles coming off the production line continue to match the approved specification?
- Are type approval validity periods tracked, with renewal applications submitted before expiry to avoid any gap in market placement compliance?
- Is a process in place to suspend sales of any model for which type approval has lapsed or been withdrawn, with immediate effect and notification to the VCA where required?
- Is type approval compliance reviewed as part of the annual regulatory compliance calendar, not only reactively when a VCA query or market surveillance action occurs?
How to run it
How the scoring works
Before the visit, fill in the dealer or centre, the auditor, the date and the audit cycle. Then score each of the 15 checks from 1 to 5 on what you see on the day, not on what the site aims for, and add them up out of 75.
- 1Not in place
- 2Attempted
- 3Defined
- 4Managed
- 5Fully sustained
- Green60–75 · 80–100%Compliant. Keep the standard.
- Amber38–59 · 50–79%Improvement needed: a structured action plan within 30 days.
- Red0–37 · Below 50%Priority intervention, escalated to regional management.
Then close every gap
Each gap goes into the action plan tracker and moves through four stages until the auditor closes it.
- 1PendingOwner and close date set
- 2In progressWork under way, evidence gathered
- 3CompletedEvidence submitted for review
- 4ApprovedVerified and closed by the auditor
Questions about this checklist
What is the difference between type approval and IVA?
Type approval approves a vehicle type for volume production; Individual Vehicle Approval checks one vehicle at a time and suits low volumes, imports and specialist builds.
Does Northern Ireland follow the same scheme?
Northern Ireland has different arrangements. Check current VCA guidance before placing vehicles on that market.
Who should run this audit?
The homologation or compliance lead, with dealers checking documents at handover.
